Dos and don'ts
Do
- A torch instead of candles
- Battery radio
- Phone in power-saving mode
- A water supply, in tower blocks the water may stop
- Check on your neighbours
Don't
- Do not open the fridge and freezer
- Do not use the lift
- No grill or gas cooker indoors (carbon monoxide)
- Don't make unnecessary calls
Unplug sensitive electronics. When the power comes back, there may be a voltage surge.
Why it matters
- Water: in tower blocks and taller buildings, water is pumped to the upper floors electrically. When the pumps stop, the water may stop too.
- News: when the mobile network and internet are down, a battery radio is the only source of information left.
- Carbon monoxide: a grill, gas cooker or generator inside a flat can poison the whole household. You cannot smell it.
Prepare in advance
Work out how much water and food to keep at home for three days on the Emergency bag and supplies page. The Kam se ukrýt app works offline, so the guides and the list of shelters are always on your phone.
