Types of shelters
- Permanent shelters are structures built to protect the population, often in the basements of large buildings, schools or hospitals. They are registered by the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic (HZS ČR).
- Blast-resistant shelters (1,477 of 1,557 in Czechia) also protect against blast waves. They are divided into classes by how much pressure they can withstand. Shelters that are not blast-resistant mainly protect against debris and radioactive fallout.
- Shelters for the public, for staff and for pupils. Every shelter is intended for someone. Company and school shelters serve their own people first.
- Improvised shelters are suitable cellars and basements in ordinary buildings that are adapted when danger threatens. Your local municipal office can tell you about improvised shelters in your area.
Prague: the metro and Strahov tunnel
In Prague, parts of the metro protection system and the Strahov road tunnel also serve as large shelters. In the app you will find them as green M and T markers, 24 entrances in total. They open only on the authorities' order. Until then they run as a normal metro and road tunnel. You will hear on the radio or from talking sirens when they are open as shelters.
